Google has been explicit for years that page experience, including loading speed, is one of the signals used to rank websites, particularly on mobile. But even setting SEO aside, speed affects something more immediate: whether a visitor sticks around long enough to read anything at all.
What actually causes a slow website
In our experience auditing existing sites, the same handful of issues show up again and again:
- Unoptimised images — a photo straight from a phone camera can be 4-8MB; on the web it should usually be under 200KB.
- Too many plugins or scripts, especially common on page-builder platforms, each adding their own loading overhead.
- No caching, meaning the server rebuilds the entire page from scratch on every single visit.
- Bloated themes that load design options and features a site never actually uses.
- Fonts and icon libraries loaded in full when only a handful of characters or icons are ever used.
Why this compounds on mobile
Most of these problems are barely noticeable on a fast office broadband connection, which is exactly the connection most website owners test their own site on. On an average mobile data connection, the same page can take several times longer to load — which is where most real visitors actually experience your site.
What a well-built site does differently
A site built with performance in mind from the start typically: serves properly compressed, correctly sized images; ships only the code actually needed for that page rather than a general-purpose framework; uses caching so repeat visits (and search engine crawls) are close to instant; and avoids stacking multiple third-party scripts that each add their own delay.
A simple way to check your own site
Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool will score any URL and point out specific issues. As a rule of thumb, if your mobile score is consistently below 50, there is real room for improvement — and real search visibility being left on the table.
